Alex
Meixner is a dynamic solo artist, composer, music educator and
multi-instrumentalist currently based in eastern Pennsylvania. Although
his main instruments are trumpet and flugelhorn, he is a versatile
performer on bass, accordions, keyboards, drums and vocals which
affords him the opportunity to perform in a variety of
musical settings.
Alex Meixner is one of a rare breed of jazz
musicians who successfully combines the influences of a wide range of
musical genres into a distinctive voice that fits in many different
contexts. His highly adaptable styles have developed under the tutelage
of many master teachers and musicians since his performing career
started at the age of six in an ethnic folk ensemble
with his father and two sisters.
As Alex's career has developed he has earned the title of
"musical chameleon" as his performing career takes him from featured
soloist with big bands, leading combo dates, performing as a sideman
with vocalists and being a featured entertainer at venues from
Las Vegas to New York City. His performance resume includes a national
PBS television special as an accordion soloist with Sandy Duncan,
performances with the London Symphony Orchestra as a classical
trumpeter and as a trumpet soloist with jazz ensembles in concert with
luminaries such as Phil Woods, Bill Mays, Carl Fontana, Steve Brown,
Dan Yoder, Bob Mintzer, Denis DiBlasio, Michael Davis and Danny
D'Imperio. He also leads Jazz Visions (his current combo) in
performances at clubs, festivals and college campuses in the northeast
US. As a recording artist, Alex performed on a 1994 Grammy award winner
with his father, Al Meixner and Walter Ostanek as well as over 30
recordings with folk, polka, pop/rock and jazz artists from throughout
the US, Canada, Mexico and Austria as multi-instrumentalist, producer,
arranger and engineer.
Alex's jazz approach melds elements of swing, latin, pop fusion and world music influences in the context of a modern jazz setting utilizing a repertoire that encompasses everything from standards to jazz classics and inventive original compositions. His trumpet playing has been praised for his use of "smart, measured and unhackneyed lines with a tone usually veiled" (Ithaca Times-NY), although he has received equal acclaim as a "highly rhythmic, dynamic and attention-grabbing soloist" (Orlando Sentinel-FL).
In addition to Alex's performing and recording career, he is a zealous music educator. Since graduating magna cum laude with bachelor's degrees in trumpet performance and music education from Ithaca College School of Music in 1998, he has been teaching master classes and adjudicating at solo/ensemble and jazz festivals.
Alex earned a master's degree in trumpet performance at Penn State University while serving as a graduate teaching assistant in trumpet and jazz. He maintains a private studio of students that have ranged in age from 7 to 70 years old. Alex is also available as an "Artist in Education" from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Galaxy Arts in Education.
In March, 2002, Alex launched his new production company,
Station House Music with the CD release "Scenes From A Parallel
Universe" by Jazz Visions featuring Alex Meixner (Station House
CD-101). This CD contains 13 original compositions by Meixner in a
variety of jazz styles as well as an arrangement of Sonny Rollins'
classic "St. Thomas".
